Ever After: Dina Bair and John Maher

Three years ago, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas and wife Mellody Hobson celebrated their nuptials at Promontory Point (5491 S. Shore) in a star-studded Hollywood affair.Later, as Dina Bair, 49, news anchor/medical reporter for WGN-TV, and John Maher, 58, broker and trader at TJM Institutional Services LLC, were biking along that same lakeside spot, she thought she could never upstage such a gala. “I [said], ‘Who would get married here? [They] ruined it for everyone!”

But when Maher proposed at Christmastime last year, Bair couldn’t get Promontory Point out of her mind. The couple — who have eight children between them — planned their July 2 wedding as an intimate, family occasion; Maher’s mother sang an Irish blessing and Bair’s son, Max, 19, performed “The Summons” as she walked down the aisle. “We wanted it to be about love and family and not worry about every last detail,” Bair says. “[It was] more about it being the first day of our marriage.”

At the reception, Max and his brother Cameron, 17, performed with their band, and Maher even sang an original song he wrote called “Making Memories” for his new wife. But it was Mother Nature who gave the best gift of all as the sun descended behind the skyline. “We looked out at that sunset,” Bair remembers, “and said, ‘Wow, we are blessed.’ ”
