Il Capodanno, or New Year’s, in Italy is filled with beautiful traditions and superstitions designed to bring good fortune and prosperity in the year ahead. From meaningful culinary customs to vibrant symbolic gestures, every practice is a reminder of the richness of Italian heritage. Here are some of my favorite Italian New Year’s traditions to inspire your celebration:
✨ Cotechino with Lentils:
This classic dish is a New Year’s must-have in Italy, from north to south. The lentils, resembling coins, symbolize wealth, while the rich, flavorful cotechino sausage represents abundance. My grandfather Gene loved this tradition, and at Gene & Georgetti, we honor him every year by featuring Cotechino with Lentils on our New Year’s Eve menu. It’s a delicious and meaningful way to celebrate the holiday!
✨ Pomegranates:
A symbol of fidelity and fertility, pomegranates bring love and prosperity to the table. Include them in your meal or decor for an elegant and meaningful touch.
✨ Twelve Grapes at Midnight:
Eat one grape for each stroke of the clock at midnight—each grape represents good luck for every month of the year ahead.
✨ Wearing (and Decorating With) Red:
It’s believed that wearing red, especially intimate apparel, brings love and good fortune. But why stop there? Incorporate red into your New Year’s Eve table decor as well! Red napkins, candles, or florals will not only brighten your space but also infuse your gathering with the vibrant energy of this Italian tradition.
✨ Out with the Old:
Clearing out old or broken items is an Italian way of symbolizing fresh starts and new opportunities in the year ahead.
✨ Kissing Under Mistletoe:
This sweet tradition is thought to ward off evil spirits and bring luck. Gifting mistletoe to loved ones is also a heartfelt way to welcome the new year.
✨ A Superstitious First Encounter:
An old Italian belief says the first person you meet after midnight might influence your luck for the year. While this may be outdated, it’s still a fun and quirky piece of Italian history to share!
We love bringing these traditions to life—especially through food and always style. Whether it’s enjoying Cotechino with Lentils at Gene’s or recreating these traditions at home, we hope your New Year’s Eve is filled with joy, abundance, and plenty of red!
Buon Anno Nuovo! Felice 2025! 🥂
