As a luxury wedding planner, I’ve always believed that the most unforgettable celebrations come from the heart. And Jason Gershman and Patrick Macellaio’s wedding at the Chicago History Museum was a heartfelt, glamorous, and utterly joyful experience from start to finish—a day that honored tradition, embraced personality, and danced unapologetically to the beat of Cher.
Jason and Patrick wanted more than a wedding. They wanted a celebration that felt like them—bold, refined, full of life, and above all, meaningful. With the grandeur of the Chicago History Museum as their backdrop, they created a moment in time that paid tribute to their love story and the vibrant community surrounding them.
From the moment guests arrived, every detail reflected the couple’s sense of style and fun. Personal touches were layered throughout, from custom signage to carefully chosen music (yes, there were Cher anthems!)—all orchestrated to create an immersive and emotional experience.
Every part of this wedding—the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception—was crafted with intention and layered with personal meaning.
The ceremony was ethereal and emotional, framed by a custom chuppah made with aspen trees, a nod to the couple’s proposal in Aspen, Colorado. That same motif returned later in the night when guests received custom aspen-scented candles as favors. The music was fully personalized, and the ceremony backdrop was a stunning recreation of the liner from their wedding invitation envelopes—a motif we later repurposed as the stage backdrop behind the band during the reception. These kinds of throughlines are what elevate a beautiful wedding to an unforgettable one.
Between the ceremony and reception, guests were ushered into a custom tented cocktail hour space—modern, sleek, and full of charm. Deep blue and gold tones created a luxurious vibe, enhanced by custom martini bars and intentionally selected champagne.
No detail was overlooked. Tuxedoed greeters in top hats welcomed guests and even assisted women navigating stairs in heels or gowns—ensuring that every guest felt cared for. This wasn’t just hospitality; it was elegance in motion.
As cocktail hour ended, guests were welcomed into the museum for a reception draped in jewel tones, dramatic florals, and bold lighting. The wedding party sat at a regal king’s table, while guests were seated at beautifully styled rounds, each meticulously designed to feel both luxe and inviting.
Jason, a lifelong equestrian, brought subtle nods to that part of his identity into the celebration—from nuanced décor touches to elevated cocktail napkins. We even swapped out napkins from dinner to late-night for a clever and fun change of pace.
The entertainment? Next level. An unexpected Cher impersonator had guests roaring with delight, while the dance floor stayed packed thanks to a high-energy band backed by our custom invitation-inspired backdrop.
As the night turned to late night, guests enjoyed curated dessert stations, including cannoli as a nod to Patrick’s Italian heritage. It was a celebration of two people, two families, and two cultures—all wrapped in thoughtful design and intentional storytelling.
What made this wedding shine wasn’t just the beauty—it was the energy. The joy. The emotional resonance of two lives being celebrated so fully, with a nod to their past and a bold, bright look to their future. These are the weddings I live for.
